Why Worst floods in Pakistan?

0

Floods result in immense damage to human lives, leaving nothing behind. Hope, happiness, hard work, and life—everything flows along with the water of the flood. People became helpless, homeless, and left unattended. Every year, Pakistan has to face this problem; it’s not something new. Every time destruction and damage worsen and nobody is doing some practical and active effort not to overcome but to at least lessen the damage. Along with heavy monsoon rain, the non-serious behavior of people also causes destruction.

In recent years, specifically flood in 2022, a flood killed around 1700 individuals, and there was damage of almost a billion dollars. Additionally, it’s the worst ever flood disaster Pakistan is facing in 2025. As a result, crops were destroyed, villages were washed away completely, and even the roads were damaged. Consequently, millions of people have been affected by this worst flood. Moreover, the reason behind the worst flood is linked to climate change, poor governance, useless infrastructure, geography, along cross-border water issues.

1. Climate Change

Climate change is the main reason for floods in Pakistan. To our surprise, rainfall increases by around 26.5% this year. Additionally, this time the rain is unpredictable, as it comes in suddenly along with heavy bursts. Having said that, we cannot ignore the predictions and statements of experts, as they have already warned us every year. Furthermore, they also explain the reasons and warn everyone of future dangers, and also propose solutions, which our government and individuals successfully ignore. They make it clear that floods are a repeated danger for Pakistan.

2. Flash Floods and Cloudbursts

Additionally, along with foods, cloudbursts are another danger Pakistan faces this year. Moreover, a cloudburst causes immense destruction within minutes. Furthermore, cloudbursts result in landslides and wipe out everything that comes in their way. Unfortunately, in Pakistan in 2025, this happened in Buner recently. Consequently, 150 mm of rain has been seen in just one hour. Additionally, the melting of glaciers in northern areas because of rising temperatures also adds to the destruction of floods.

3. Cross-Border Water Issues

Pakistan and India share rivers. Furthermore, both agree to the Indus Waters Treaty. Moreover, both inform each other timely if the level of wastewater is high. Additionally, India has now suspended the Indus Water Treaty because of the tensions in Kashmir. It becomes free from any restrictions and rules, and regulations. Consequently, Pakistan has suffered. Having said that, also consider that it’s not a kind of revenge or grudge. We need to see the fact that dams become overdue due to heavy monsoon rains. Consequently, water releases. That water enters Pakistan and causes destruction. Furthermore, a lack of communication and poor coordination make the situation even worse.

4. Geography, Deforestation, and Land Misuse

Furthermore, the natural geography of Pakistan also plays a significant role in floods. Additionally, human actions are also the major cause of destruction on a large scale. Deforestation and soil erosion are also the reasons for floods. Moreover, illegal construction is also the clear cause of this massive destruction. Above all, people don’t pay attention to the warnings by the government, and they keep on living their lives. At the same time, this non-serious behavior costs their precious lives, and they are left with nothing. An example of this is the people who live on the bank of the river. Additionally, in 2025, the prime example of illegal construction is Parkview Society. It is said that that land was the land of the Ravi River, and somehow, due to poor governance, someone managed to get permission to build a society there. Consequently, we see extensive damage to the houses and the hard-earned money of people.

5. Human and Economic Consequences

Over and above that, floods are not just about water; they bring a cycle of suffering and pain. On top of that, floods in 2025 caused widespread devastation along with the loss of around 849 people’s lives, and there are a lot who are missing. Furthermore, people have to leave their houses. Tragically, they have to live in shelters; mostly people are living in an open area despite the weather conditions because they don’t have any other option.

Why are the 2025 floods the worst?

This is because of all the factors we discussed earlier, like severe rainfall, cloudbursts, and illegal construction. Additionally, deforestation, poor governance, and weak infrastructure. Moreover, weak dams and cross-border tension—all these factors come together. This deadly mix is the reason for immense destruction.

Preventive measures

To be safe in the upcoming years, we should
Spread awareness.
Encourage plantation.
Build dams.
Upgrade the city drainage.
Use more weather radars.
Show positive behavior by following the instructions of the government.
Protect wetlands.
Stop using the land of the river illegally.
Train individuals for first aid
Build and maintain infrastructure.

In short, Pakistan has to face the massive destruction every year unless it pays attention to all the details. To sum up, Pakistan can reduce the damage, as floods are natural disasters and no one can truly end them. All we can do is make a deliberate effort to save our country, our society, and our people.
